Unlocking Personal Growth: The Power of Embracing Resonance and Dissonance in Your Relationships
Choosing Your Growth Pattern
Have you ever noticed that some relationships feel magical, and others feel blah? Resonance and dissonance are natural (occurring in us and the Universe) and impact our lives more than we realize.
Humans gravitate toward people they like and have good feelings with. When we do, we resonate with those humans. These relationships tend to agree with us. They accept us as we are and encourage us to honor our authenticity. When we’re around someone we resonate with, it can feel warm and joyful. Resonance is relational.
The other side of the coin is dissonance. When in the company of someone we are dissonant with, it can feel harsh and disagreeable. The experience can be triggering, but it can also be a teacher. Humans are programmed to embrace new ideas and experience new points of view. Therefore, innovation and change require us to embrace dissonance. When you choose to look at your challenging relationships as your teacher, life can be empowering.
“Wisdom accepts that all things have two sides.”
– Carl Jung
Sure, it feels good to be around warm and encouraging people. Personally, I love being in the company of my favorite people. But, my most significant breakthroughs and teachers have been in relationships with dissonance. Sameness is not a stimulant; it is stagnant. If you wish to stay the same, remain in resonance. If you wish to grow and have a transformation, invite dissonance. Balancing both is essential.
How Vibrations Shape Our Reality.
Resonance and dissonance are a natural part of our Universe.
Resonance vibrations run through almost every aspect of physics, but most people are unfamiliar with it (add it to the list of things they don’t teach you in school). It makes music, radio, TV, and stable structures possible. You can even hear the sound of resonance in the Universe itself – check out NASA Sounds of the Sun. The father and inventor of electricity, Nikola Tesla, was obsessed with resonance.
“If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.”
– Nikola Tesla
Dissonance also runs through our Universe and impacts our reality as well. For example, let’s look at musical dissonance and how it is experienced by a listener. In certain musical styles, dissonance gives shape through increases and decreases in harmonic tension, creating beautiful and dramatic intervals. Some of the most iconic musical intervals ever created include classics such as Beethoven’s ‘Für Elise’ or Harold Arlen’s ‘Over the Rainbow.’ We all know the healing and connection powers of music; how would our experience change if musical notes and vibrations were all the same? Would its power reach everyone? Would the impact be the same? Remember, sameness is not a stimulant; it is stagnant.
“Dissonance (if you are interested) leads to discovery.”
– William Carols william
Why It Matters.
Resonance and dissonance both serve a purpose and need a harmonious state of balance. Too much resonance breeds a high degree of sameness and stability. Too much dissonance begets instability and chaos. To grow and expand your consciousness, a world of resonance and dissonance must be established.
So, will you consciously choose to grow and expand?
